Fence panels
The quickest and most affordable way to fence a sheltered Eastbourne garden.
Panel fencing uses ready made panels, usually 1.83m wide, slotted between posts. Lap panels (thin overlapping slats) are the cheapest; heavier options such as tongue and groove or double sided panels cost more but stand up better. Panels suit gardens with some shelter, for example many of the semis and bungalows around Hampden Park, Langney and Willingdon.
What it costs
Typically £120 to £185 per panel (about £65 to £100 per metre), supplied and fitted. A fencer can usually fit 10 to 15 panels in a day.
Panels and the wind
A solid panel acts like a sail. In open gardens, ask about slotted concrete posts with panels held by clips, heavier weight panels, or a slatted design that lets some wind through. Cheap lap panels are the ones most often found in the road after a winter storm.
Good and less good
- Lowest cost and fastest to fit
- Easy to replace a single damaged panel
- Shorter life than closeboard, and lighter panels can lift in strong winds
Common questions
How many panels do I need?
Measure the run in metres and divide by 1.83. Or count your existing posts and take one away.
Can I reuse my concrete posts?
Often yes, if they are sound and the panels are a standard size. Your fencer will check on the visit.
