Slatted fencing uses horizontal boards with small gaps between them. It looks contemporary, suits newer homes such as those around Sovereign Harbour, and has a practical benefit on the coast: the gaps let wind pass through, so the fence is under less strain in a gale.
What it costs
Typically £185 to £295 per panel width (about £100 to £160 per metre), supplied and fitted, as most slatted fences are built to measure.
Things to decide
- Gap size: narrow gaps for privacy, wider gaps for a lighter look and less wind load
- Timber: pressure treated softwood is cheapest; cedar or larch weathers to a silver grey
- Fixings: stainless steel screws stop rust streaks in salty air
Common questions
Is slatted fencing private?
With gaps of 10 to 15mm it gives good privacy while still letting light and air through.
Does slatted fencing need planning?
The same height rules apply as for any fence: 2m in a back garden, 1m next to a road.
