Picket fencing is a low, open fence of upright pales, usually under a metre. It is a natural fit for front gardens in Old Town, Upperton and the older parts of Meads, where low boundaries are part of the street's character.
What it costs
Typically £100 to £175 per panel width (about £55 to £95 per metre), supplied and fitted. Painted finishes cost a little more.
Before you choose
- Front garden fences next to a road are limited to 1m without planning permission
- In a conservation area, keep to materials and styles that suit the street; check with the council if you are replacing an old wall
- Painted pickets need repainting every few years near the sea
Common questions
Can I put a picket fence on top of a low wall?
Yes, but the combined height counts towards the 1m limit next to a road.
Is picket fencing secure?
It marks a boundary and keeps small children and dogs in, but it is not a security fence.
